BBC Radio 2 Listeners Name Toy Story Song Top Animated Movie Track as Fans Share Personal Favorites.

A nationwide survey of BBC Radio 2 listeners has identified Randy Newman’s ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ from Toy Story as the top animated movie song of the past 50 years, while online communities continue to share personal favorites including ‘Stand Out’ from A Goofy Movie, ‘Zero to Hero’ from Hercules, and ‘Reflection’ from Mulan.

The countdown, titled Radio 2’s Ultimate Animated Movie Song Countdown, was compiled from listener votes and revealed in August 2022. The top 50 list was curated by a panel that included Radio 2 movie critic James King, BBC Radio 1 movie critic Ali Plumb, and Rhianna Dhillon of BBC Radio 6 Music.

Randy Newman’s ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ topped the list. The song was released in 1995 as the theme for Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story. It received nominations for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song and has appeared in subsequent Toy Story films.

The Top Rankings

The top five songs in the countdown were: ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ by Randy Newman from Toy Story; ‘Circle of Life’ by Carmen Twillie and Lebo M from The Lion King; ‘You’re Welcome’ by Dwayne Johnson from Moana; ‘Let It Go’ by Idina Menzel from Frozen; and ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ by Elton John from The Lion King.

‘Zero to Hero’ from Hercules ranked at number 23 on the list. The song was written by Alan Menken and David Zippel and performed by the Muses, voiced by Tawatha Agee, Lillias White, LaChanze, Roz Ryan, Cheryl Freeman, and Vaneese Thomas. The track appeared on the Hercules soundtrack released in 1997.

‘Reflection’ from Mulan placed at number 32. The song was written by Matthew Wilder and David Zippel and performed in the film by Lea Salonga, who provided the singing voice for the title character.

A Goofy Movie Track Gains Attention

While ‘Stand Out’ from A Goofy Movie did not appear on the Radio 2 list, the song has maintained a dedicated following since its 1995 release. Performed by Tevin Campbell, the track was written by Roy Freirich and Patrick Deremer.

‘Stand Out’ focuses on themes of confidence and self-belief. The lyrics include lines about standing above the crowd and making an impression: ‘Gonna stand out ’till you notice me.’ The song has been arranged for choir performances at the high school and college levels, with arrangements noting its message about ‘improving oneself to be better, being noticed, being unique, having self-confidence.’

Background on Reflection

‘Reflection’ holds a significant place in music history beyond its inclusion in Mulan. A pop version recorded by Christina Aguilera, then 17 years old, served as her debut single. The song was released to adult contemporary radio on June 15, 1998.

The success of ‘Reflection’ led RCA Records to fund Aguilera’s debut album. Aguilera has stated that hitting the high note required for the song was ‘the note that changed my life.’

In a 2024 interview, Aguilera said the song has ‘stood the test of time’ and added: ‘People love that song so much because it’s about not being seen and that’s been a part of my career.’

Aguilera re-recorded ‘Reflection’ for the 2020 live-action adaptation of Mulan. The new version appeared in the film’s closing credits alongside a Mandarin-language version sung by Liu Yifei.

Other Notable Selections

Beyond the Radio 2 countdown, animated movie songs continue to circulate in online discussions and social media. ‘Somewhere Out There’ from the 1986 film An American Tail has experienced a resurgence on TikTok, with users applying the song’s themes of longing and distance to content about long-distance relationships and nostalgia.

The Tarzan soundtrack, featuring songs written and performed by Phil Collins, remains a frequent subject of online appreciation. ‘You’ll Be in My Heart’ from the film won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe and spent 19 weeks at number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

The Radio 2 countdown also recognized other songs from the Disney Renaissance era and beyond. ‘I’ll Make a Man Out of You’ from Mulan ranked at number seven. ‘A Whole New World’ from Aladdin placed at number eleven. ‘How Far I’ll Go’ from Moana ranked at number twelve. ‘When She Loved Me’ from Toy Story 2 appeared at number seventeen.

The full top 50 list reflects a range of animated films spanning several decades, from The Jungle Book and The Little Mermaid to more recent releases including Encanto and Frozen 2. The countdown was broadcast on BBC Radio 2 with OJ Borg, featuring guests including Peter Gabriel, who contributed to the Wall-E soundtrack, and Lebo M from The Lion King.

BBC Radio 2 has not announced plans for a follow-up countdown. The 2022 list remains the most recent large-scale survey of animated movie song preferences conducted by the network.
