A female protester wearing a shirt that read ‘Release the Epstein Files’ was punched in the face by a Trump supporter during a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, on Monday night, according to video footage and multiple reports from the scene.
The incident occurred while President Donald Trump was criticizing Ohio Democratic Senate candidate Sherrod Brown, who is challenging Republican Senator Jon Husted for his seat in the November 3 midterm elections.
The Altercation
Video broadcast on Newsmax and circulated widely on social media showed a rally attendee shoving the woman, striking her in the face, and grabbing her by the hair.
At one point, the man appeared to attempt to slam her face toward the ground as the crowd chanted ‘USA.’
At least three men were seen grappling with the protester during the confrontation, which lasted approximately 20 seconds before law enforcement intervened.
Police separated the two and escorted the woman out of the Covelli Centre. The man who struck her remained in the arena and was seen exchanging high-fives with other attendees.
Trump’s Response
Trump appeared to notice the disruption from the stage and accused the protester of being paid to interrupt the rally, though he offered no evidence for the claim.
The president also mocked the protester’s appearance, repeatedly referring to the woman as a man.
‘He’s a paid protester,’ Trump said. ‘They’re all paid. They get paid by the lefties in order to destroy our country. They’re scum. But he’s going back home to Mom. He’s going back home to Mom. Look at him. Look at him. Terrible. Don’t we love law enforcement? Oh, he’s gotta go on a diet! He’s a fat guy. Wow. Wow. Gotta go on a diet fast. We all do.’
Trump later added, ‘No, they’re paid protesters. That’s a very low-class protester.’
Additional Protesters Removed
The confrontation was one of several disruptions at the Youngstown rally. An earlier incident occurred while Ohio Senator Jon Husted was speaking, when a man and a woman were dragged away by police.
Another protester carrying a jacket displaying the Mexican flag was also removed from the venue.
The woman’s shirt referenced the ongoing bipartisan scrutiny of the Justice Department’s delay in releasing additional documents related to the investigations into Jeffrey Epstein, the deceased financier who was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
Prior Violence at Recent Rallies
The Ohio incident occurred just days after a similar confrontation at a Trump rally in San Antonio, Texas, where a man wearing a MAGA hat grabbed a heckler by the hair and pulled him to the ground.
C-SPAN cameras captured the moment the protester was pulled down after exiting the venue, as Trump commented from the stage.
Social media reaction to the Ohio footage prompted criticism regarding why the man who struck the protester was not detained.
