Nicolas Cage said he refused to sign an artificial intelligence waiver for the Amazon Prime Video series Spider-Noir and indicated he will likely not work with the studio again.
Cage made the remarks on Saturday during a spotlight panel at New York Comic Con on the Empire Stage.
Dispute Over AI Waiver
Cage told the audience that Amazon asked him to sign a waiver permitting the use of artificial intelligence on the production.
He said Amazon is ‘a very AI-friendly company, to the tune of 50 billion dollars invested to OpenAI’.
‘I am not an AI friendly actor,’ Cage said. ‘I didn’t sign the waiver to let them use AI on Spider-Noir. It’s kind of like I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again. But that’s OK’.
Cage has spoken against AI in Hollywood before. In 2024, he told The New Yorker he was terrified of the technology. At the 2025 Saturn Awards, he said ‘robots cannot reflect the human condition for us’.
Spider-Noir Cancellation
Amazon canceled Spider-Noir after one season in September 2026. The cancellation came days before the Emmy Awards, where the series had earned 11 nominations, the most for any Prime Video program that year.
The show accumulated 2.6 billion minutes viewed in its first six weeks, according to Variety. It also won several Emmy Awards, including honors for stunt coordination, sound editing, title design, special visual effects, and cinematography.
Cage said shortly after the cancellation news broke: ‘For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man. Onwards, upwards, inwards’.
Plans to Work With Gen Z Directors
Cage said he wants to work with younger filmmakers who operate outside traditional studio systems.
‘I got to get with these young directors who are Gen Z and they’re going at it their own way, whether it’s through the YouTube culture or whatever it is,’ Cage said. ‘They’re doing it from scratch and by hand. I want to get with that’.
He praised Gen Z filmmaker Kane Parsons, who gained attention on YouTube before directing the film Backrooms.
True Detective Announcement
Cage also used the panel to reveal he will join the fifth season of HBO’s True Detective.
‘My agent’s out there somewhere listening,’ Cage said. ‘That’s okay that I’m the first to announce that, right?’
The actor said he plans to balance film and television work going forward.
