World Mental Health Day 2026 Urges Action on Lived Experience and Community Care.

World Mental Health Day 2026 is observed on October 10 under the theme ‘Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,’ calling for people with lived experience of mental health conditions to be placed at the center of decisions affecting their care and support.

The theme was announced by the World Federation for Mental Health and is supported by the World Health Organization, which emphasizes that people with lived experience bring expertise that cannot be gained through professional training alone.

More than 1 billion people globally live with a mental health condition. These conditions account for 1 in 6 years lived with disability worldwide and contribute to significant distress, disability and inequities, according to WHO.

The campaign stresses that meaningful engagement goes beyond sharing testimonies. Lived experience expertise should guide decisions from the beginning and throughout the process, from planning policies and services to implementation and evaluation.

WHO has called on governments, health systems and organizations to embed people with lived experience as equal partners across mental health policy development, service design, implementation and evaluation.

The campaign also highlights the need for rights-based, person-centered care rather than custodial systems. Millions of people with mental health conditions remain isolated in institutions instead of receiving support to live and participate in society.

Over 80 percent of countries currently provide mental health services in psychiatric hospitals, according to the United Nations Secretary-General’s message for World Mental Health Day 2026.

The UN Secretary-General noted that this year’s theme reflects the fact that people are too often excluded from decisions about their own lives, and that their insights are essential to shaping effective services and policies.

The message specifically highlighted the situation of young people facing economic uncertainty, climate anxiety and online harms, as well as people of all ages affected by conflict and humanitarian crises, where disrupted services compound distress.

WHO has launched new guidance to support countries in transitioning from institutionalization toward rights-based, community-based mental health care. The document is titled ‘Supporting the transition to community-based mental health and social care: Practical guide to the deinstitutionalization of psychiatric hospitals.’

The World Federation for Mental Health has expressed hope that organizations worldwide will organize events reflecting this year’s theme while also supporting WHO’s initiative on deinstitutionalization.

Various countries and institutions have announced activities in observance of the day. In Montserrat, the Community Mental Health Team will host a week of activities including testimonies from persons with lived experience, a youth art and poster competition, and the launch of the Montserrat Green Ribbon Pledge.

Montserrat’s Ministry of Health and Social Services noted that despite the availability of free mental health care, stigma and discrimination continue to limit access to services for individuals living with mental health challenges.

In Lebanon, the National Human Rights Commission called for meaningful participation of people with lived experience in policy development, service design and evaluation, and stressed the need for affordable access, continuity during crises, and protection from discrimination.

The European Parliament noted that the 2026 theme calls for people with lived experience to have a meaningful role in shaping mental health policies and services.

Stanford Medicine highlighted that its programs are guided by perspectives from individuals with lived experience, caregivers, and community members.

The World Health Organization’s Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean reported that mental disorders have an age-standardized prevalence of 15.7 percent in the region, compared with 14.2 percent globally. Depressive disorders stand at 4.7 percent and anxiety disorders at 6.3 percent, both exceeding global estimates.

The region has made strides in engaging people with lived experience. The Regional Coalition for Mental Health and Substance Use Prevention, launched in 2024, provides a platform for meaningful engagement and change.

WHO has released a framework for meaningful engagement of people living with noncommunicable diseases, mental health conditions and neurological conditions, along with guidance on peer support and mental health training.

The Global Mental Health Action Network, a network of over 11,000 members in more than 170 countries, has created a new guide sharing practical advice on how to work meaningfully and respectfully with people with lived experience.

A webinar held on October 9 brought together experts by experience from Indonesia, New Zealand and Rwanda, alongside representatives from WHO, the World Federation for Mental Health, UnitedGMH and GMHAN.

The new Care Not Custody allies group was launched for anyone who wants to support deinstitutionalization, connecting people with lived experience and others committed to the transition toward community-based care.

United for Global Mental Health quoted a statement emphasizing the importance of listening: ‘If we are serious about involving people with lived experience in our work, then one of the simplest actions we can take is to stop asking them to justify their experience.’

WHO has stated that listening means more than hearing. It means creating real opportunities for people to shape change. People with lived experience understand mental health systems in ways that cannot be gained through professional training or research alone.

The campaign’s call to action emphasizes that nothing about us without us. Mental health policies and services are stronger when they are designed, delivered and evaluated with the people who use them.

As of October 10, 2026, organizations and governments worldwide continue to hold events, launch resources and share stories aligned with the theme, with WHO’s campaign materials and publications available through its official channels.
