October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2026, with campaigns worldwide emphasizing early detection, screenings, and support for survivors. The World Health Organization reports that 2.4 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer globally in 2024, and 694,000 died from the disease .
The WHO theme for this year is ‘Every story is unique, every journey matters’ . The campaign recognizes that every experience of breast cancer is different and that people may face varying challenges depending on their diagnosis, treatment, and access to care.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. In 2024, it was the most frequent cancer in women in 164 of 186 countries . Approximately 80 percent of breast cancers occur in women with no specific risk factors other than sex and age .
Global Disparities in Survival
Major inequalities in breast cancer survival persist worldwide. About 41 percent of women in low-income countries are expected to survive at least five years after diagnosis, compared with 87 percent in high-income countries . Around 70 percent of breast cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries .
The WHO Global Breast Cancer Initiative aims to reduce these disparities. It has set targets for countries to diagnose at least 60 percent of invasive breast cancers at stage I or II, ensure diagnosis within 60 days of first presentation, and provide comprehensive treatment to 80 percent of those diagnosed .
Screening Guidelines and Events
Health organizations are using October to promote screening. In Singapore, the National University Cancer Institute is offering dedicated mammogram slots for women aged 40 and above at five polyclinic locations . The initiative includes roadshows, pink hour activations, and a ‘Message to the Future You’ installation at the NUH Medical Centre .
The American College of Physicians updated its breast cancer screening guidance in April 2026. For women aged 50 to 74, the ACP recommends biennial mammography . For women aged 40 to 49, the guidance calls for shared decision-making between patients and clinicians .
Dr. Amir Qaseem, the ACP’s chief scientific officer, told Medscape Medical News that the guidance is for asymptomatic, average-risk females. ‘It does not apply to adult females who have breast cancer symptoms or are at higher risk for breast cancer,’ he said .
In Coimbatore, India, Sri Ramakrishna Hospital launched the ‘Pink Path’ initiative to make breast cancer information accessible in English and Tamil . The campaign covers symptoms, risk factors, early detection, and survivor experiences.
