Chad Lowe and his wife, producer Kim Painter, have confirmed the death of their 13-year-old daughter, Fiona Hepler Lowe. The family announced the news in a statement shared with People magazine on Tuesday.

“We are deeply heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Fiona,” the family said in the statement.

Fiona was the second of Lowe and Painter’s three daughters. She was born on November 16, 2012, and would have turned 14 later this year. Her older sister, Mabel Painter, is 17, and her younger sister, Nixie Barbara, is 10.

In their statement, the family remembered Fiona as “a loving young girl who was smart, creative and loved to dance.”

“She was adored by her sisters and she was deeply loved by her parents,” the family said. “In fact, she was the light of our lives.”

The statement also asked for privacy during what the family described as a devastating time.

“Her passing is devastating for our entire family and we ask for prayers and privacy at this time,” the family said.

The statement concluded with a resource for others who may be struggling with mental health. “If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, please reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988.”

A Family Remembered Through Recent Posts

Lowe, 58, is an actor known for roles in “Life Goes On,” for which he won an Emmy, as well as “Pretty Little Liars” and “Melrose Place.” He is the younger brother of actor Rob Lowe. Painter, 52, works as a producer.

In November 2025, Chad Lowe shared a birthday tribute to Fiona on Instagram as she became a teenager.

“Celebrating Fiona officially becoming a teen today!!” he wrote. “Keep dancing through life FiBear! Love you soooo much!!”

The birthday celebration followed a difficult period for the family. In January 2025, their home in Pacific Palisades was destroyed in the Los Angeles wildfires.

In February 2025, Chad Lowe posted about returning with his daughters to see what remained of the house where they had grown up.

“Almost a month after we evacuated our girls finally got to go back to see what’s left of their home,” he wrote. “The way they’ve handled this whole devastating experience is nothing short of remarkable. I am in awe of their spirit and resilience. Helping them navigate these tough times is my sole purpose. Being their dad is my life’s greatest joy and privilege.”

Details of the Death

Law enforcement sources told TMZ that Fiona died at home on Tuesday and that authorities were called to the residence at 12:10 a.m.

Page Six reported that parents at Fiona’s school received an email from the principal on Tuesday informing them that a student had died. The email did not name the student and said counselors were available for students and staff who needed support.

A cause of death has not been officially released by the family. The statement’s inclusion of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline has led several outlets to report that the family alluded to mental health struggles. The Daily Mail, citing the family statement and law enforcement sources, reported that Fiona died by suicide.

Fiona is survived by her parents, Chad Lowe and Kim Painter, and her sisters, Mabel and Nixie. The family has asked for prayers and privacy at this time.
